Careful search for winners

April 20th the jurying for the competition FOLOLO - decorate a children’s waistcoat took place. Jury members Lilian van StekelenburgBerthi Smith and Rieneke Stroeken (from left to right) tackled 93 special, colourful and, most of all, with love and enthusiasm decorated children’s waistcoats: 63 “small”, 30 “large” and 1 “children”, from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and Israel. Next to the three prizes for each category the jury also awarded 3 honorary mentions per category.

Berthi Smith has a report of the jurying on her blog (April 21, 2010). Her jury experience:

“About a year ago I was asked by Mirjam Pet-Jacobs to be a jury member for Fololo - decorate a children’s waistcoat for Congo, together with Lilian van Stekelenburg and Rienek Stroeken. A special responsibility I really liked to take upon me with the other ladies. On Tuesday April 20th we concentrated on the 93 entries. I was immediately struck by the care and attention that was put into each waistcoat. Some participants Had chosen for one technique, other had sought the challenge of mix of several techniques that lead to surprising results. The theme Fololo was applied well. Actually each participant deserved a prize, but, it being a real competition, we had to decide for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. We judged on originality, finishing, use of material, embroidery (both hand and machine), application and patchwork. After a thorough discussion we made a beautiful selection. And next to these prize winners the three of us thought it important to have three honorable mentions for every category.”

Lilian van Stekelenburg’s jury experience:

“Last year I, being a designer, was asked to be creative with a waistcoat. As I often work with textiles I really liked this project and the combination with a good cause made it even more special.
So it was a nice surprise that I was asked to be part of a jury this year.
I felt like a child in a sweet shop when I saw all the waistcoats together, all those beautiful colours and especially all the work that had gone into them.
We took all waistcoats in hand, turned them inside out, looked at every stitch and then finally the moment came to make our choices.
So what to do next? Would we follow our own tastes, would it be excellent handwork or originality? Finally we were able to make excellent choices, the winners had made well thought-out and surprising work, one by means of use of colour and form, the other rather by ingenious and surprising design, some wonderfully emphasized the Fololo theme or gave the theme children’s dress a very personal touch and, above all, all the work was also beautifully finished.
It does not mean that the work that has not been awarded a prize does not meet these criteria, but there can only be a few prize winners. So I would really like to stress to everyone that, when there will be another opportunity to express creativity and workmanship, to join in again.”
